If you’ve been moved by Raynor Winn’s memoir The Salt Path — or are curious about the new film adaptation — there’s no better way to connect with the story than by walking part of the path yourself.
Much of the film was shot right here on the Exmoor coast, and staying at our woodland glade campsite puts you right at the heart of this wild and beautiful landscape. This blog post shares a self-guided walking route that explores key locations from the book and film, all within reach of your stay.

A Salt Path-Inspired Walk from Porlock to Minehead
Distance: 6–8 miles (optional extensions)Time: Half day or full dayDifficulty: Moderate — a mix of woodland, hills, and coast pathHighlights: Sea views, wild landscapes, peaceful harbours, film locations
1. Porlock to Bossington Hill
Start in the charming village of Porlock — grab a coffee or some local treats, then make your way toward Bossington and climb up to Bossington Hill. This is your first taste of the dramatic coastal views that define The Salt Path.
Film moment: Sweeping shots of Bossington Hill’s moorland and coastline appear in the movie, capturing the wild freedom Raynor and Moth felt as they left their old life behind.
2. Hurlstone Point
Continue along the path to Hurlstone Point, a rugged outcrop looking out over the sea. This is a quieter stretch, with windswept cliffs and bird calls — perfect for slowing down and taking it all in.
Pause here: It’s a great place for a flask of tea, a sketchbook, or just a moment of stillness.
3. Descend to Porlock Weir
Follow the trail down to Porlock Weir, a tiny harbour that’s full of charm. With its pebbled beach, weathered boats, and peaceful atmosphere, it’s easy to see why this spot was chosen for the film.
Film moment: Porlock Weir features in reflective scenes in the movie, as a peaceful place of pause and perspective.
4. Optional: Continue Toward Minehead
Feeling adventurous? Extend your walk by following the South West Coast Path eastward, climbing up to Culvercliffe Walk and North Hill, and ending at Minehead, the official start of the Salt Path.
Film moment: Minehead, North Hill, and the Culvercliffe Walk all feature in early parts of the film, marking the beginning of Raynor and Moth’s journey.
